MURRAY HANTMAN

on Monehgan

Murray Hantman first visited Monhegan Island in 1945 and traveled there from New York City for 30 summers thereafter.  Over his career Hantman moved from representation to abstraction, and the Monhegan painting, "Pink Sky" on the right is an early example of this transition.  He is known for his bright colors that can be seen in Pink Sky as well as in the more abstract work, Lystrum #3, a detail of which is above.  During the 1960's he moved more firmly into abstraction and was granted a MacDowell Fellowship in 1970.  He taught for 20 years at the Brooklyn Museum School and bequeathed his estate to the Portland Museum of Art which held a retrospective exhibition of his work in 2006.
