Am. 1907 - 1985

Michael Loew was an American abstract expressionist painter who painted on Monhegan Island.  He purchased a home on Monhegan in 1960 and added a studio in the early 1970's. According to a 1972 New York Times article, his studio had "[o]ne of the finest views on the Eastern Seaboard, more than 180 degrees of unbroken horizon."

His work is included in numerous museums including the Monhegan Museum of Art (see image to the right), the Whitney Museum of Art  (see image to the right) and the Guggenheim Museum.   He had solo exhibitions at the Portland Museum of Art and the Farnsworth Museum in 1956 and 1997 respectively.
