A photographer whose works are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, Leo Brooks became a well-known Maine watercolorist late in his life. He began painting watercolors and developed his distinctive style on Monhegan Island in his 60's.  This style is typified in Fishermen- Monhegan and Lighthouse, both of which are shown on the right.  His playful experimentation is illustrated in Sparkling Foam, the detail of which is at the top of this page where he painted the foam of the waves with his fingers!  His obituary in the New York Times provides an appropriate snapshot, "Man of strong conviction and good humor, lover of life, artist par excellence, warm and generous friend to many."
